The Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly section 8) is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market and rental subsidies to lower-income families that meet established income guidelines.

January 2020 a computerized random lottery was completed, 2,500 households selected and added to the Inkster Housing Choice Voucher waiting list. All applicants received information indicating the status of their application and was informed by U.S Mail and email when their name was placed on the Waiting List.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rental subsidies to lower-income families that meet federally established income guidelines. Program participants find their own rental housing and use the vouchers they receive from the Inkster Housing Choice Voucher Program (IHCVP) to help pay the rent. Funds for the program are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). When a family finds a suitable l unit and the property landlord agrees to participate in the Housing Choice Voucher program, the family submits the following information to the IHCVP:

Rental property owners who participate in the IHCVP program must:
Per federal requirements, property rented to HCVP tenants is re-inspected annually by the IHCVP. It is illegal for property owners to discriminate based on prospective tenants’ age, race, sex, religion, disability or national origin. It is also illegal to deny tenancy based on the fact that a household has a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher subsidy.
Payment Standard is the gross rent of the unit, NOT the final approved rent. Gross rent is the TOTAL of rent + utilities combined. Each utility the tenant is responsible for paying changes the calculation.
